Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all my customers, old and new. I am now back in the workshop, keeping out of the rain and enjoying making a dresser for an alcove in a cottage. I do like the traditional work, but it is lovely having a bit of variety.

I am using oak for the whole drawer which makes a heavy long lasting product. In the past, most drawer linings, backs and anything unseen in a piece of furniture would have been a cheaper softwood. If nothing else it makes the furniture much lighter. Definitely worth thinking about if it is going upstairs!

A dovetail joint. Sign of quality and strength.

Modern display storage

Sometimes in bespoke work, you get a chance to reinvent the wheel. Display cases and shelves have been around for the last 300 years, but what we display has changed.
In the past it would have been china ornaments, curiosities and stuffed birds in glass cases.
Now, if you are a publisher, it might be the magazine or books you produce. Here the shelves are designed to show the front covers rather than the spines.

These cases are designed to support the magazines at a slope, to prevent damage, and make a perfect surround to the television.

The Parquet flooring is complimented by the ultra modern grey colour on the shelving.

An Oak Desk For Any Office

This desk, made from solid oak is made to either fit with other furniture or stand alone. It's four drawers are full depth and could be lockable.
You could add a compartment for hiding valuables, put drawers down both sides and make a knee hole desk.
The possibilities are endless and as a bespoke piece of furniture, it would be unique to you.
As this desk was solid oak it was extremely heavy, so the top is not attached to the base. So if you look carefully the heat of the sun is already moving the top.
Better get it back inside pronto!

Need to fit a gun safe?

Bespoke work is always interesting and this job made a plain cupboard into a useful and hidden place for a gun safe. Not the average bedroom storage solution!

Still plenty of storage for clothes though.

Please can you make a pretty medicine cupboard?

A medicine cupboard is an essential fitting in most bathrooms. But generally, they are utilitarian and rather boring. Often they have a mirror door, sometimes a lock and usually adjustable shelves.
So it is nice to be asked to make a feature of a useful cupboard.
The shelves are fully adjustable with a wipe clean finish for hygiene. Whilst the outside is fun with added hand carved corbels and glass knobs.

A tree with a view.

The brief for this was a bench round the tree where you could settle with a cup of coffee, looking at the view. But there were three different and rather special views to look at,
Made of douglas fir, this bench should withstand many years of use without the need to treat the wood with preservative. eventually it will fade to a grey colour, blending in with the trunk it surrounds.

Mike, can you make me a ....

Not every job is a big one, but they are all just as important.  Quite often the client seen something in a magazine, book, or sometimes a visit to someones home, and this starts an idea. They like what they have seen, but perhaps they want it bigger, or a different shape, or different finish.
Key cupboards can be bought off the shelf, but for 40 keys?
